Call for Nominations – Delaware Valley Engineer of the Year

Attention all Engineering and Technical Societies of the Delaware Valley!

On behalf of the engineering and technical societies of the Delaware Valley, the Engineers’ Club of Philadelphia (ECP) is issuing this call for nominations. If you have an individual that you feel is worthy of such recognition, please nominate him/her for 2027 Delaware Valley Engineer of the Year. The deadline for submission of nomination packages is 5:00 pm on Friday, October 23, 2026. Societies (inclusive of the ECP) are encouraged to team up with other societies in preparing a nomination.

You are encouraged to contact the EOY Coordinator* to let us know if you are considering or intending to nominate a candidate. Information on all the candidates will be posted at www.engrclub.org prior to the election.

Specific Duties of the Engineer of the Year

  • The selected candidate's activities begin immediately after their election.
  • The selected candidate will need to be responsive in the early days following his/her election. It is expected that the selected candidate's business organization will submit some publicity releases, working in conjunction with the Committee’s PR consultant.
  • During DVEW, the EOY is scheduled to make remarks at the kickoff dinner.
  • The new EOY is encouraged to attend DVEW Committee meetings beginning with the December meeting.
  • The EOY may be asked to author articles for various publications (assistance may be available from the Committee’s PR consultant).
  • The EOY is likely to be asked to speak at various engineering and technical society events and is encouraged to seek out such opportunities throughout the year.
  • The EOY is expected to work with the Engineers Club and DVEW Committee throughout the following year (through to and including the March debriefing meeting). The expected duties are:
    • Participate in the DVEW Committee meetings,
    • Be the Master of Ceremonies for the following year's Awards Luncheon and Celebration of Engineering Reception, and
    • Be the voice of engineering, including speaking at technical society meetings and speaking on behalf of the Club / engineering with the media as appropriate.
  • The technical or professional society that sponsored the selected EOY candidate is expected to provide an organization representative to serve on the DVEW Committee.
  • The DVEW Committee includes an Advisory Committee, composed of past EOYs.
    • The EOY will serve as vice chair of the Advisory Committee during their award year, followed by a year as Chair. The only duty as Chair of the Advisory Committee is to convene a meeting in the event the DVEW Committee desires to draw upon the collective wisdom of the past EOYs related to some key issue. This is a rare occasion.
    • The members of the Advisory Committee are called upon to select the Hall of Fame inductees and Outstanding Service Award recipients; the award coordinator sends out the nomination materials at an appropriate time in the fall.


Delaware Valley Engineer of the Year

General Information on the Nomination and Election Process

 

NOMINATIONS                                                                      

 

Each technical society in the Delaware Valley is encouraged to nominate a candidate for Engineer of the Year. Societies are encouraged to team up with other societies in preparing a nomination. An election will be held in November to determine the Engineer of the Year from among the nominees.

 

To nominate a candidate, provide the following:

  • Complete the Nomination Form
  • Provide a 1000-word biographical sketch of the nominee (in MS Word)
  • Provide a high-resolution head / shoulders photograph of the candidate in electronic format.

     

    The biographical sketch should address these areas to allow the delegates to understand the candidate’s qualifications:

  • Current Professional Responsibilities
  • Education
  • Honors and Awards
  • Professional Career Data
  • Papers Published and Patents
  • Society Memberships and Officers
  • Civic Organizations and Offices

     

    Note that some companies require that nominations such as this be reviewed and/or approved by internal departments. It is the responsibility of the candidate to handle those approvals.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS                                                                      

     

    The nominee must

  • Be a graduate of an accredited curriculum with a degree in engineering;
  • Have a career of achievement and leadership, which exemplifies contributions of the highest professional order;
  • Have a life which manifests the value of an engineering degree;
  • Be a person of stature and visibility; and
  • Be a person who will represent the profession well and proudly acclaim its virtues.


DELEGATES TO THE ELECTION                                                                      

 

  1. Each professional and technical society in the Delaware Valley (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania and Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Mercer and Salem counties in Southern New Jersey) is entitled to appoint two delegates to the election.

     

  2. A delegate must be a member of the organization he/she is representing. The delegate’s names should be submitted by an officer of the organization by the published deadline.

     

  3. A society may wish to instruct its delegates on its criteria for voting for a nominee.

     

  4. All former Engineers of the Year are entitled to vote at the election.

 

 

ELECTION RULES                                                                      

 

  1. The candidates will be asked to attend the election (most likely to be held virtually via video conference) and have an opportunity to address the delegates for approximately five minutes prior to voting.

     

  2. Voting will take place immediately following the candidates speech.

     

  3. Voting by proxy is NOT permitted. A delegate must be present and accounted for to cast a vote. An alternate delegate may cast a vote only in the absence of a delegate.

     

  4. Each organization delegate and each former Engineer of the Year present is entitled to one (1) vote.

     

    1. An individual may function as the delegate for only one organization.

     

    1. Former Engineers of the Year may vote in only one capacity.

     

  5. To be elected Engineer of the Year, a nominee must receive the majority of votes cast on a ballot.

     

  6. In the event of a tie, the Chair of election (not having voted) shall cast the deciding vote.
