Abstract: Transit signal use ungrounded energies to detect position of trains using vital circuit design. The track circuit for this could be 300 feet to a few miles, so the exact position, direction, and speed of train is unknown. This is an inefficient use of real estate especially, if 30 or more trains per hour have to operate. To improve throughput, CBTC (communication based train controls) is being deployed, which also meets FTA/FRA PTC requirements. However, CBTC uses 3 V or 12 V redundant design of computers and network switches which require Zero Reference Ground (ZRG). How do you achieve ZRG in transit with leaking DC currents?
Speaker: Vijay Lalchandani served for 30 years at New York City Transit in roles of power engineering, signaling design, project management, and senior management. As the Manager of Power Operation Engineering, he coordinated the maintenance of 215 substations and 300 circuit breaker houses. While Director of Signal and Power Engineering, he coordinated a billion dollar Signal Capital Program. He managed multiple electrical and signal engineering projects as the Assistant Chief Officer. Presently, he works for SYSTRA. Vijay studied electrical engineering in Bombay, India (BSEE). He is a licensed professional engineer in the State of New York.
